Flushing anything down the toilet other than human waste and toilet paper can be like flushing your cash down the drain!  Residential sewer lines are smaller in diameter than collection system lines and more likely to clog.  That can result in a costly plumbing bill for the homeowner.  But, when the collection system clogs, it can cause sewage to back up, possibly even streets and homes, and costly repairs that result in higher rates for everyone.

Important Information About Sewer System Upgrades in Mesquite & Organ
We are just wrapping up a $3 million construction project in Organ that included some improvements to the wastewater lagoon and a large-scale project ($8.9 million) in Mesquite that replaced the entire collection system, eliminated the wetlands treatment facility and tied in to the Dona Ana County South Central Treatment Facility.  So, we'll kick off this Consumer Education page with a focus on how to prevent costly repairs to your sewer lines and our systems.

The old system in Mesquite included septic tanks with pumps in customers' yards that our Operations staff maintained.  The new gravity system eliminated nearly all of these, and our operators will no longer be doing any maintenance on residential lines on the new system.

What is Gray Water?

Gray water is defined as untreated household wastewater that has not come in contact with toilet waste. Gray water includes wastewater from bathtubs, showers, washbasins, clothes washing machines and laundry tubs. It does not include wastewater from kitchen sinks or dishwashers or laundry water from the washing of material soiled with human waste, such as diapers. 

Many of the people who responded to our Water Conservation Survey asked about gray water.  Below is a link to download a flyer on Gray Water from the NM Office of the State Engineer.  Utilizing gray water can help you conserve water and save money, but there are some precautions.  See the flyer for more information.

Did You Know?
  • "Flushable" wipes and kitty litter are NOT really flushable, they can clog sewer lines
  • Toilet paper is the ONLY kind of paper that should be flushed, it is designed to easily break up and not plug the lines
  • Drugs (prescription or not) should NEVER be flushed because treatment systems are not designed to remove them, and they can contaminate waterways.
  • Fats, Oils & Grease should NOT be poured down the drain.  A 15 ton "fatberg" was discovered in the London sewers that took three weeks to clear!
